A fun telescope indeed! Beginning astronomers will enjoy hours of stellar exploration with this amazing little tabletop reflector telescope. Designed specifically with first-time telescope buyers and their families in mind, the FunScope is a great way to "test the waters" of stargazing - affordably!
The FunScope is a great first telescope for kids and young adults who show an interest in space and astronomy. FunScope is a real reflecting telescope with a 76mm (3") diameter polished spherical mirror which allows you to capture 60% more light than a typical 60mm beginner's telescope. More light gathered means the FunScope will provide views of the cosmos that are brighter and clearer than views in smaller diameter telescopes.
Unlike many beginner-level telescopes you might find at department stores, the FunScope comes equipped with a host of useful accessories and features so you can start having stargazing fun right away.
With locations and names of over 260 features on the Moon such as craters, mountains, valleys, "seas" and more, the Orion MoonMap 260 included with the FunScope Moon Kit is a great tool for beginning astronomers. Try a fun family activity of sketching craters and other Moon features you see in the FunScope eyepiece, and then find them on the included MoonMap 260 to discover their official names. Or, you can keep the MoonMap 260 handy while you look through the FunScope to help identify lunar features as you observe them. "Wow, that bright crater is named Tycho!
Every night you use the FunScope, start with the 20mm eyepiece to see a wider, less powerful view, then you can boost the magnification by using the 10mm eyepiece to take a closer look. Using both the 20mm and 10mm included eyepieces gives you a variety of magnifications to stargaze with, and you can purchase other 1.25" eyepieces to use with the FunScope as you grow in the hobby. Both eyepieces fit in the FunScope's rack-and-pinion focuser which has smooth focus control so you can get clear, sharp views of the Moon and other targets.
The FunScope also includes a very useful red-dot aiming tool called an Orion EZ Finder II Reflex Sight which makes it easy to aim the telescope at objects in the sky. After you align the EZ Finder II with the Funscope, just look through the EZ Finder's small viewing window and place the red-dot on the object or area of sky you want to see in the FunScope. Then look in the FunScope's eyepiece, focus, and you'll be looking at a magnified image of the object you aimed at!
But what can you see with it? A lot! With the FunScope, the whole family can see craters, valleys, and mountains on the Moon in exquisite detail. You'll be amazed that you're looking at the same Moon you see out almost every night, since it looks so much more detailed and interesting when seen through the FunScope. The FunScope telescope's 76mm aperture, or diameter, can also obtain good views of bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn. Seeing ringed Saturn in real-time through a telescope like the FunScope is a memory young astronomy hobbyists are certain to treasure for a lifetime. Jupiter also makes for a unique sight, and on clear evenings you'll be able to see the giant planet's four brightest moons (named Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto) which appear as four bright dots surrounding Jupiter. Check in on Jupiter every night when it's visible to see its four moons in a different position as they orbit the gas giant planet. It's fun to imagine what position the moons will be in from night-to-night. If you're able to get the FunScope away from city lights and urban light pollution, this pint-sized telescope will amaze you with views of sparkling star clusters, cloudy emission nebulas and some of the brighter galaxies. Be sure to get out to a spot with inky-black dark skies to get the best views of these distant "deep space objects."
The FunScope's tabletop mount arrives pre-assembled in the box so you don't have to worry about assembly. The tabletop base provides a sturdy and compact foundation for the telescope with smooth motion in altitude (up and down) and azimuth (left and right) axes. If there isn't a table located where you want to use the pint-sized reflector telescope, the entire FunScope assembly can be mounted onto a tripod equipped with a 3/8" or 1/4"-20 threaded post since the FunScope features a built-in 3/8" tripod adapter and included 1/4"-20 threaded bushing. (Tripods sold separately.)
Weighing just 1.8 kilograms, the ultra-portable FunScope TableTop Reflector Telescope Moon Kit can go with you just about anywhere! It makes a great gift for anytime of the year, and is sure to get "oohs" and "aahs" once unwrapped. Who knew so much fun for the whole family could come in such a small and affordable package?
